REVIEW: There’s no time like these days to make a conscientious and punctiliously-researched movie about scholar politics of the 1990s, fuelled by way of caste and sophistication divide. But while someone attempts a film around this critical problem, without sufficiently sinking their tooth into the topic, the occasions that came about then, and the scene in the back of the key happenings of the era, the result looks as if Hurdang, directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat.
Spread over 122 mins of run time, the film sets up a love tale against the backdrop of the agitation amongst students in Allahabad (today’s Prayagraj) in the 12 months 1990 towards the Mandal Commission record’s implementation. Neither has the backdrop been researched and displayed properly, nor has the affection story been fleshed out in a manner that it churns your insides.
